We spent most of the day enjoying the beautiful weather outdoors at the Heard Museum which is a 289 acre natural science museum and wildlife sanctuary. They have nature trails, bird watching, a native plant garden, and great education programs. Before we even got into the museum, Nicholas was having fun just playing on the raised map of Texas.
We were priviledged to go to the museum during their special Dinosaur exhibit. They had life-sized animatronic dinosaurs along one of the trails. You could see them move and hear them roar while learning interesting facts about them along the way.
Along the path we made some new friends with another mom and her two children. We walked along the dinosaur path with them and Nicholas was very excited to have some new friends.
And have you ever seen this dinosaur before? This was a new one to me. He sure does look funny!
After we had explored outside, we ventured indoors for some of the museum exhibits. They had some cool things to look at and Nicholas really enjoyed the skeleton of his favorite dinosaur, T-Rex.
But above all else, Nicholas' favorite exhibit was the giant Mesosaur that he could run through. It took up a large part of one room. We walked into the creature through his gapping mouth, ventured down through the rib cage and viewed his lungs, heart, stomach, liver, intestines that were painted on the wall. What an incredible way to teach children about the inner workings of a body! Even I had a lot of fun - although I didn't have to run through it 50 times like the kids did!
A really unique thing about this museum is that they have a "touch me" table. Many of the artifacts on the table were already damaged in some way and I'm sure they were items that couldn't be used in an exhibit but it was a lot of fun for Nicholas to be able to touch the bones, turtle shells, seed pods, and rocks. We love hands-on learning!
