This Week at MES

At school this week, Nicholas' class made Valentine's cards for the senior citizens at a local nursing home. The class as a whole is growing a flower bulb. They are keeping an eye on the roots as they grow in water.

Montessori works: Nicholas practiced lacing, cutting, pouring, and coloring. He used a paper punch tool to punch holes around a heart - a fun way to improve fine motor skills.

Language: Nicholas reviewed the Flower Parts puzzle. He practiced printing his name. He also colored story blocks on a page, cut them out himself and assembled the story line in order to make a little book.

Math: Nicholas counted conversation heart candies and used them to demonstrate addition. He also practiced counting by 10's. He enjoys doing this and just starts going through the numbers on his own at home.

Good Shepherd lesson: Baptism of Jesus

This week MES had parent-teacher conferences. I never like these. They are just too formal for me. But all that said, Nicholas is doing well at MES. Here are some comments:

Areas of Accomplishment: "Nicholas sparkles with warmth, intelligence, curiosity, determination, and love! His enthusiasm and humor are contagious. Nicholas' positive attitude and caring ways are observed daily. New information is easily grasped and recalled. He's on target in the four areas of development."

Areas for Growth: "We will continue to help Nicholas learn patience and self-control which are essential for future learning. We will continue to set and enforce boundaries." I agree that he does need to work on patience, self-control, and boundaries - but so do most three year olds so I'm not really concerned about these.

Teacher Comments: "Nicholas is charming and equalled only by his intelligent mind! He exudes love and joy for his teachers and peers. Nicholas is good-natured and helpful. He is an asset to our class."

I've registered him to continue in Mrs. Carrico's class again next year. However, I still feel a tug at my heart to try homeschooling him. I think he would do well. However, it has to be a good fit for both of us. Although I would have so much fun teaching him at home I've got to admit that I need that time to myself while he is in school. I think I'm a better mom and wife when I've had a little quiet time to myself to recharge. I have until May to get my registration money back from MES if I decide to homeschool him next year.

For Valentine's day, Nicholas gave each child some candy and stickers. He also made cookies for his teachers.
