Blastball Game Cancelled

Nicholas had his first Blastball game yesterday but it got cancelled because the ground was too wet. However, our team didn't find out about it until we were already at the field. So we let the kids get some practice in.

Nicholas loves hitting the ball and running to base. But he gets a little bored when he's in the outfield as seen in these pictures.

But he sure did get mad at himself when he didn't catch the ball because he was too busy playing around!

Attempt at a Family Portrait

Last week, we tried to get a family portrait. Stuart brought the camera and tripod out to a park so we could take our own picture. He took tons of pictures just to get one decent one. Nicholas was having too much fun acting silly to pose seriously. Many of our pictures include Nicholas singing, talking, and making silly faces. Most of them look something like this!

But we did finally get a good one with all of us sitting still, smiling, AND looking at the camera. Amazing!

We were done with the pictures that we needed to take and were ready to go home but Nicholas had other plans. He got this wild-eyed look and decided he wanted to run around and climb on rocks while we were there.

Nicholas climbed up a rock and gave us some impromptu poses for a few more good pictures.

Then he turned around and looked at the creek down below on the other side of the rock. He glanced back at us and gave us that sneaky grin as if to say, "I'm going to climb down this rock and go exploring, with or without you!"

Playing with Sidewalk Chalk

Nicholas and I love playing with sidewalk chalk. We just wish we had more concrete to draw on. Nicholas brought his phone outside because he said he might get an important call while we were out. Shortly after we started drawing, he got a "call" from Grandmother Chance. He said that Grandmother was on her way over to visit and she would be there any minute.

Nicholas asked me to draw his outline so I did. Notice how his pants are covered with chalk. He also had quite a bit smeared on his face too.

I drew some animal tracks on the sidewalk and asked Nicholas to identify them. He got them all correct - bird, dog, duck.

Then he told me to pretend that I was a bird and I had to walk on the tracks and then continue around the side of the house. That was pretty silly since we are out in our front yard as I'm flapping my arms pretending to be a bird in front of all of our neighbors :) Nicholas waited a moment for me to get out of sight then he followed my tracks as he pretended to make notes in his nature journal then he made a big deal out of finding me, the bird. Next, I had to repeat the game as I pretended to be the dog and then the duck. But Nicholas REALLY liked this game so once I had acted out all three animals, he had me start over again from the beginning. It was silly but fun!

Fun at Coppell Park

We recently had a family picnic at Coppell Park. It's Nicholas' favorite park to go to. Before he got too dirty, I asked him to pose for some pictures in front of a beautiful flower bed. He couldn't sit still for long but I think we got some good shots.

Then we were off to play. Stuart got in on the fun too!

Of course, Nicholas had to play in the giant sand box. He had a great time playing with new friends, pouring sand, digging in the sand, and even collecting "treasure", aka acorns. Of course, there was sand all over him and inside his clothes by the time we left. But, hey, that's what bath time is for!

We had brought a kite and his bicycle but we had so much fun at the playground that we never even got them out.

Questions about the Easter Bunny

This morning, Nicholas asked, "How did the Easter Bunny get my Easter basket that I used for the egg hunt?" I was a little concerned about him catching on to this but I thought he would be too excited to realized that it was the same basket. But no, he remembered that he had used that basket for the egg hunt and now wanted to know how the Easter Bunny managed to get it and fill it with all of his goodies on Easter morning. I played dumb and asked him how he thought that might have happened. He said, "I know! He sent his baby bunny upstairs to get it because he knew that we would hear him if he went up to get it." Whew! Sounds good to me :) Next year the Easter Bunny will have a different basket though.

Happy Easter!

Friday, March 21, 2008

Our family colored Easter Eggs today. It was quite messy but lots of fun. Nicholas enjoyed pouring the water into the dye cups then putting the dye pellets in them. We watched the dye as it dissolved in the water. Nicholas quickly dunked a lot of eggs and he got a little careless. At one point he dunked his entire hand in the red dye cup which resulted in a stained hand and red dye all over the table. But we just continued with the fun. Once all of the eggs had been dunked and dyed, Nicholas started re-dunking them in various other colors. We ended up with some really cool looking eggs.

The Easter Bunny came! Nicholas had to find his Easter basket and it didn't take him long. It was hidden behind a curtain by his castle table. He was so excited. The Easter bunny brought too much candy as always but also had some toys, stickers and a big bottle of bubble bath in a cool Transformers bottle - which came in handy when it was time to wash all of the candy stickiness off of him!

An Outing in Gainesville

Yesterday, Nicholas and I took a little trip up to Gainesville to visit the Frank Buck Zoo and Leonard Park. Before venturing into the zoo, we decided to stop for some lunch. I love to try "hole in the wall" restaurants that I've never heard of so we went to Taco Casa. I think only in Texas can you walk into a Mexican restaurant and hear country music playing in the background. Nicholas ordered the super nachos. The platter ended up being about the size of his head. He enjoyed them but hardly made a dent in the pile of chips.

The Frank Buck zoo was nice but very small. It has a nice wooden boardwalk that lets you travel over a large part of land and look directly down on the animals which was fun. We watched the kangaroos lazily enjoy an afternoon nap in the sun and zebras grazing on the grass.

There is a little "petting zoo" where you can feed and pet goats through the fence. Nicholas loved this. He enjoyed petting the goats but he was too afraid to hand feed them. Instead he put a piece of food on a bench outside the hole in the fence and made the goat strain their neck trying to eat. He got all giddy and happy when the goat ate his food but no matter what I said or did he didn't want to even try hand feeding.

Outside the zoo is Leonard Park which is a cool wooden playground with lots of hands-on activities that we just had to check out.

Before going home we had to stop for some ice cream. Nicholas loves vanilla so he ordered that, of course. However, he wanted to try my strawberry sorbet and he ended up eating most of it! Little stinker!
